In 1992, Marie Keller and her colleagues Dr. Elise Turen, and Maureen Morrissey were inspired to found the Los Angeles Gender Center in response to a need for culturally sensitive counseling for transgender individuals and communities. Through their commitment to providing the highest quality of care, they came together to offer services under the name of the Los Angeles Gender Center. As the need for affirming therapy grew, so did the members of LAGC. Marie and her colleagues began mentoring interns, and in 2007, recognizing the growing need for children and adolescent services, the Los Angeles Gender Center created the Child and Adolescent Program under the leadership of Susan P. Landon. This program aimed at servicing the unique needs of children and adolescents and their families by focusing on the entire family unit and offering group support for parents. The Child and Adolescent Program grew rapidly and became well known for the expertise of the counselors and the sensitive care provided to our young clients.
In 2015, 23 years after it all began, LAGC formalized as a non-profit organization and marked the end of Marie's career as the Executive Director. She retired and served as the board chairperson until September 2019. In 2017, Maureen Morrissey left LAGC to continue working in private practice in Orange County. Dr. Elise Turen has remained involved with LAGC as one of our affiliate private practice therapists, and Susan P. Landon continues to serve as the Director of the Child, Adolescent, and Family Services Program.
